In makinbg their case for funding, the PHA and ship channelo private industriesestimated $231 million was neededr to return the channel to its most efficien depth.
Funding received will go towardfmajor maintenance, operations and environmental projectsw associated with the 53-mile-long ship channel. Fundingg will also go to provide additiona construction and dredged material placement capacity to avoid the increasedd costs of transporting dredge material todistant sites. The PHA hopes to secure the remaining $140 millio needed through increased fiscal-year 2010 and fiscal-year 2011 appropriations.
Meanwhile, the Port of Galveston, througjh the Army Corps of Engineers, will use its $40 milliob to complete the Houston-Galveston Navigatio n Channels Project that was authorized in the Watee Resources Development Act 1996 while improving the Galveston Channel to a depth of45 feet.
