Texas wind-power firms file to sell energy credits to N.C. utilities - Philadelphia Business Journal:

afukakuja.wordpress.com
Three Texas wind farms await approval to register as renewableenergy facilities. Registration is a requiremen t of all renewable energy projects built in the Butthese applications, filed by Houston-based energyg development company Element Markets, signal the entryg of out-of-state companies angling to satisft the demand that Nortu Carolina utilities are goinv to create for renewabl e generation due to new state The Public Staff, the utilities commission’s consume arm, has reviewed the files and recommendsd approval. North Carolina utilities won’tg be purchasing power from these Texaswind farms. Rather, they will be able to buy the “renewable energy credits.
” “You’re paying for the renewable saysJames McLawhorn, director of the Public Staff’ Electric Division. Renewable energyg has a value beyond the energgitself – in the form of a renewable energy or REC, that can be bought and sold. Nortb Carolina utilities would be interested in buyin credits from Texas facilitiew to help them meet state targets forrenewabl generation, McLawhorn says. The 2007 energy legislatiom Senate Bill 3 requires Nortg Carolina utilities togenerate 12.5 percent of their powere from renewable sources by 2021. Up to 25 percent of that requiremenf can come frompurchasinv out-of-state RECs. The Texas wind facilitiex are large: a 79.
8 megawatt facilityg in Hansford County and two 10 megawatt facilities inMoore County. McLawhorn says the power from the facilities is purchase d byTexas utilities, but the glut of wind generatio n in Texas means they have RECs to spare. Elementt Markets’ business includes trading renewablenergy credits. The prefers renewable generation be buil within a particular state so its benefits the power generated and the jobscreatexd – stay in the state, says Wind Program Coordinator Brandon Blevins.
But he adds that buildingt any new renewable energy facility takes time and that utilities face a deadlin to meet the renewable generation Purchasing RECs allows a utility to more quickly get renewable generation into its Rogervon Haefen, professor of agricultural and resource economicxs at , says the price of an REC is set by marke forces. He expects demand for RECs to go up as demandd for renewable energy and particularly if federal legislation creates additional requirementsfor utilities. Von Haefen says that in some cases, RECs offerf a less expensive way to supporgtrenewable generation.
If Texas has superior wind energy resources, directint North Carolina dollars to Texas makes economic sensw because it will bring more wind energy online atless cost, he But RECs don’t always translate into additional investmenft in energy generation. In some cases, buying RECs pays the owners of the generation for somethinbg they would bedoing anyway. Von Haefen is unfamiliard with theTexas facilities, but he says debates about RECs and carbon offsets center aroun whether these policies create new renewable “If we’re not, we’re not getting anything out of the policyu other than moving the credits around and raising costxs for North Carolina utility customers,” von Haefen

The Minneapolis-baserd chain is testing the policyh in twomarkets — Denver and Orlandok — and will use those results to help it decidwe whether to take the offer nationally, spokeswoman Deliz McLinden said.
Thus Target joinsx both locally managed and nationak chains specializingin electronics, general goods or even fitness equipment that offer similar The price-matching policies first began to sprinhg up roughly 20 years ago, but really have gained steanm in the past 10 years, according to Ken a marketing professor at . But several company owner said they see this as a more appropriat e time to offersuch deals.
McLindeb said Target decided to try out the policy as part of a new marketin push to emphasize its low prices during a time of Jim Pearse, owner of Thornton-based chai n , said maintaining such a policy makes it easiert to build customer trust at a time when people tend to shop arouned more. “In this economy, it’as a great service to the customer,” Pearse said. “When the competitioh is havinga sale, then we’re having a sale on the same … From the customer’s point of it gives them more confidence to make a But while some customers will scan ads and compare prices of specific most don’t do that level of homework — and that’s what stores hope for, said Donals Lichtenstein, professor and chairman of the marketing division of the ’s Leeds School of Business.
Instead, many shopperse will hear that a store offersa price-matching guarantee and just assume that any business that would do that also woulde have low prices, Lichtenstein said. And they’ll buy from that storre without noticing thatwhat they’r purchasing might be more expensiv e than the same item somewhere else. The carefuo shopper may find that some storesw sell a unique productthat can’t be compared to other stores, Manningh and Lichtenstein said. Take the home-fitnessw machines at , a 10-storew Colorado chain based inGlenwood Springs.
HealthStyles is the only licensed Colorado dealer for severa linesof equipment, meaning that no othetr store in the state could advertise a comparabls price, co-owner Dave Sheriff Of course, some potential customers still will bring in online ads or ads from othed states, in which case Sheriff has to make sure the listexd price includes freight, warranthy and delivery. Biotech

million with fuel giant . The two companies plan to builxd the biggest cellulosic ethanol plant in the in Florida. Verenium (Nasdaq: is just one of the many biomass-relate d ventures gaining tractionin Massachusetts, which has a long histort of investment and research in the biotechnology sector. Roughly $200 millioj in venture capital has poured into the local sector over the past two years a flood of money for a sector that saw virtually no local investment priorto 2006, according to data provided by Dow Jonese VentureSource. As of last year, the state had roughlhy 30 companies focused onthe development, production and distributionm of biomass products and services, accordingy to the .
Cellulosix ethanol is biomass madefrom non-foor plants and waste — for instance, grass or sewagee instead of corn. In Florida, you can grow 18 to 20 tons of grasseswper acre, per year a tremendous advantage over the growing potential in But Carlos Riva, Verenium’s says the company’s headquarters will remain in “The reason to be here is the busineses climate, the quality of people, the sources of innovation and the support of the government,” he Indeed, the Bay State’s biotechnology sector has proveb a fertile breeding ground for startups seekint to convert biomass into alternatives to fossikl fuels.
Jim Lane, the editor of the national daily newsletterBiofuels Digest, agrees with Riva’w assessment. “From both an investor and producer poinrof view, the top five bioenergy clusters are San San Diego, Seattle, the Corn Belt and Massachusetts.” Lane said the region’ss strength in this field can be attributer in large part to the strength of the technology coming out of the area’d universities. But he said another importany factor is that because the venture capital communit is used to funding biotechnology they are used to the risk and long time horizons that also come withthe sector’x energy-focused startups.
And “they get the science,” Lane All of which is a big advantage in gettingy technologiesto market. He said the other advantage the region has is the commitmentof top-levepl state lawmakers. But some say the recession has reducec some ofthe state’s, and the sense of urgency over bringintg alternative fuels to market. Michael Raab of , another cellulosic biomasss makerin Cambridge, said the urgency in the publi c domain has waned a bit sincre the recession set in. “Our commercial prospects lookex a lot better when oilwas $100 a barrel,” he said.
Raab also said that even with the best researcuand development, and strong support from government, there are still some technical difficulties in simply going from makingb a small amount of fuel to scaling it up to the mass productiomn needed to really changs the way Americans use energy. But the long-terjm picture for the state’s alternative energt industry looks strong. Biofuels executives and advocatesd are encouraged by thestimulus package, which includesz an $800 million granr for biomass. Another $400 millioj has been set aside for the creatio n of a new agency to be calleethe -Energy, an appropriation that could also benefit the biomass industry.

Giving blooms in economic winter - Atlanta Business Chronicle:

Del Martin of nonprofit fundraiser was recently namede chairpersonof , which has been studying giving trendz for 50 years. "Thw effect is that there's never been a decrease in recessio years," she said. "There's been a rate increase. Givingb still goes up." Martin said the reason for that is wealthuyindividuals -- take Arthur for instance, whose family foundation gave out $19 milliobn in gifts in 2007 -- will continue to give at a similarf rate.
Endowed foundations do not want the work ofnonprofitx -- whose service to the community is needed more in difficulgt economic times -- to be negatively affectec by the vacillations of economic As a result, those endowments are put in safe investmentsz that are largely impervious to downturns in the stock Plus, the federal government requires foundatione to give out a minimum of 5 percengt of their holdings annually. It's for reasons like those that Beauchamop Carr, executive vice president of the Woodruff Arts Center and its chief is not worried aboutthe organization's corporate The arts center has set a goal of $8.7 millionh this year for the fund that covers its operating expenses and it must meet it in 10 as it has changed its fiscal year. The way it shakess out, people might give to fewerf things, but they will certainly give to Emory." whose expertise is helping nonprofits meettheire goals, appeared to agree, in a way. "Youi could probably find smaller nonprofits that are dependent on smaller gifts that perhaps have startesd to seesome effect," she said. Those she said, tend to depend more on government which often is cut quickly in a Martin said a recession could affecgt annual fund giving in the form of smaller gift by corporations that give a percentager ofpretax profits. gives a percentage of pretax profits and it also gives throug hits foundation.
Lajuana Bradford, Wachovia's community relations executivefor Mid-South and Virginia, said the bank'a corporate foundation has a budget for giving in metro Atlantaa of about $3 million the last few But Wachovia is in a giving mode and it doled out $8.8 million last year for specialo projects, including the Beltline and the Cente for Civil and Human Rights. Bradford said the company's guideline is to donate 1 percent of theprevious year'sa pretax profits. In the current banks have tightened lending and been subject to lossesa from the subprimemortgage crisis. Quarterl y earnings reports for banks havebeen ugly.

"We don't expect the environment to have any effect on our giving atthis time," Bradforsd said. According to Giving USA, nonprofi t giving has not decreased durinyg recessions for the last 50 Nonprofit giving representsbetween 1.2 percent and 2 percent of grosws domestic product, according to Givingh USA. Study: Charitable giving down in 2008 - Puget Sound Business Journal (Seattle):

moakhamet84.blogspot.com
According to an annual report released Wednesday bythe , U.S. givingy in 2008 totaled $307.65 billion, down about 2 percent from 2007’sw record total of $314.07 When adjusted for inflation, the drop is 5.7 percent. The reductio n is the first inthe survey’s 52-yeaer history caused by economixc conditions. A slight decline in 1987 is attributede to changes intax laws. This year coulrd see a steeper decline due to a variett of factors including proposed federal limits on househol d charitabledeductions , increased savings rates and the generalk economy, said Jimmie Alford, founder of the , a nationa nonprofit consultant based in Seattle.
“Irt would not surprise me at all for givingt to be down on a nominal basisin 2009,” Alford Alford said 2009 could bring a reduction in giving of betweeh 3 percent and 5 percenty in actual dollars. Individuals accountedx for the majorityof giving, contributing 74.5 percent of all donations. Foundation s accounted for 13.4 percent, bequests contributed 7.4 percent and corporations contributed the smallesr amountworth 4.7 percent. When adjusted for all major sources of giving reduceedtheir contributions. Corporations cut back the lowering their giving by8 percent. Abouf half of all corporate giftsare in-kind donations of products like food or software. Individualo giving fell 6.
3 percent when adjusted for It is thelargest drop-offc among individuals in the survey’s history. Foundation giving fell by an inflation-adjusted 0.8 percent in 2008. with the precipitous drop in the stoc k market and the way that foundations calculate theirdistributiobn totals, Alford said he expects foundationn giving to continue to deterioratee this year. For 20 years foundationm giving hasrisen dramatically, from $11.19 billionh in 1988 to $41.21 billion in 2008, on an inflation-adjustexd basis. The drop in foundation giviny also likely signifies a reduction in the formatioh ofnew foundations.
“There will be I think, growth in famil y foundations as a reflection in the growth of the Alford said. That also means it is less likelyg anyone will form a new foundation to rivapl the sizeof Seattle’s , which as of April 1, 2009, had $27.5 billion in tota assets. Among giving only religious organizationsand “public benefit” groups saw their donations increasr during 2008, according to the But those uses can be misleading as both of thosde segments contribute to other includinfg human services. The steepest decline among recipients was inhumahn services, which experienced a 15.9 percentt reduction in inflation-adjusted dollars.
The reduction is Alford said, because usually human service agencie s see an increase during recessions as donore steer more money to basid needs like food and Other steep declines were seen byhealth (10 percent), Arts (9.9 percent), educationj (9 percent) and the environment/animals (9 Altogether, giving as a portioj of the nation’s gross domestic product remainedc steady at 2.2 percent. The nonprofi sector accounts for about 10 percenf ofthe nation’s GDP and employs 18 million, most of whom work in educationj and health care, according to the Alford Group.
